Healthcare providers and researchers work together at this center of expertise to provide the best possible care to those patients who have a congenital immunodeficiency disease, also known as ‘primary immunodeficiency’. We aim to provide patients with the best possible treatment and to better understand how immunodeficiencies develop.

Our center is also known as the 'Afweercentrum'.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Congenital Bone Marrow Failure and Leukemia Predisposition Syndromes

This center of expertise is specialized in the treatment of children and adults with congenital or inherited disorders of the bone marrow. The disorders lead to reduced blood formation and an increased risk of developing myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute leukemia.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Congenital Hand and Upper Limb Disorders

A team of specialists at this center of expertise focuses on diagnosing and treating children with hand and arm disorders.

Our center is also known as the 'Handenteam'.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Congenital Heart Diseases

At this center of expertise, we provide care and treatment to children and adults with congenital heart defects. We are also available to help pregnant women who are expecting a child with a heart defect. Our care sometimes starts before conception and may continue into adulthood.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Congenital Lung Malformations

This center of expertise devotes itself to congenital lung disorders. These disorders can occur in the lung tissue, in the blood vessels or in the airways.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Spinal Dysraphism

At this center of expertise, we provide care for children and adults with congenital abnormalities of the spine and spinal cord (spinal dysraphisms). We treat both open and closed congenital defects.

• Spina bifida is an open congenital defect. Another name for spina bifida is ‘myelomeningocele’, or MMC. Erasmus MC is the only hospital in the Netherlands that can treat spina bifida before birth.
• Closed congenital abnormalities include spinal lipomas.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Pediatric Autoimmune Diseases

In children with an autoimmune disease, their immune systems attack their own bodies and this causes inflammation.

The Academic Breast Cancer Center is part of this center of expertise. Physicians and nurses dedicated to the treatment and support of women with breast cancer work here.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Bone Diseases

We treat adults and children with complex, rare, and sometimes hereditary bone diseases at the Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Bone Diseases.

This accredited center of expertise is part of the broader Erasmus MC Botcentrum, which also treats common bone diseases.

Our center is also known as the 'Botcentrum'.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Anatomical Congenital Malformations

At this center of expertise, we provide high-level care for children with both congenital and acquired disorders of the colon and anal canal.

Our pediatric surgical center is also known as the ‘Kindercolorectaal centrum’.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Breast and Ovarian Cancer

The Academic Ovarian Cancer Center is part of this center of expertise. Physicians and nurses dedicated to the treatment and support of women with ovarian cancer work here.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes

At our center of expertise, we treat patients with Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and conduct scientific research to improve future treatments. The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes are a group of inherited connective tissue disorders. Patients with EDS have, for instance, disorders of the joints, skin or organs.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Sickle Cell and Thalassemia

A great deal of knowledge, expertise, and experience is required for the treatment of sickle cell disease and thalassemia. We consolidate the knowledge and expertise of specialists from multiple fields at our center of expertise. We offer our patients excellent care. We also provide future parents with information and advice on heritability. Much of our scientific research has resulted in international publications.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Neurodevelopmental Disorders

This center of expertise collates information in the field of rare congenital disorders involving cognitive developmental impairment. We offer our patients highly-specialized care and diagnostics. We also conduct research to gain a better understanding of these disorders. We want to further improve our treatments with the outcomes of our research so that we can improve the quality of life for our patients. Several specifically recognized disorders, such as Neurofibromatosis type 1, Angelman Syndrome, and Sturge-Weber Syndrome, are covered by this center of expertise.

Our center is also known as ‘ENCORE’. ENCORE is an abbreviation for ‘Erfelijke Neuro-Cognitieve Ontwikkelingsstoornissen Rotterdam, Erasmus MC’ (Hereditary Neurodevelopmental Disorders Rotterdam).

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases

At this center of expertise, we provide specialized care to children and adults with inherited cardiovascular diseases, as well as their family members. We perform several tests, including hereditary testing. A multidisciplinary team then draws up a treatment plan. The knowledge gained from our scientific research helps us to continuously improve and develop innovative treatments for inherited cardiovascular diseases.

The Pompe Center is part of the accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Lysosomal and Metabolic Diseases

We treat patients with Pompe disease at the Pompe Center. Our main goal is to cure these patients and give them a better future. Research conducted by Erasmus MC has led to Pompe disease being the first treatable muscle disease. But we believe there is always room for improvement, which is why we are continuously working on the development of innovative therapies.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Lysosomal and Metabolic Diseases

At our center of expertise, we offer support to children and adults with rare metabolic diseases. We are committed to delivering the best patient care, improving diagnostics, delivering interesting training and education, and conducting innovative research.

The Center for Porphyria is part of the accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Lysosomal and Metabolic Diseases

The Center for Porphyria is the point of contact for all porphyria patients in the Netherlands. We strive to provide patients with the best possible care. We also involve regional treatment centers in our knowledge center. In this way, we can increase expertise in the field of porphyria across the Netherlands. In addition, we conduct research at our center: our own research as well as research in collaboration with others. We give advice to internists, pediatricians, and gastroenterologists on metabolic diseases, including porphyria. We are also a source of information for patients, their families, and other interested parties.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Hereditary Dyslipidemias

This center of expertise is for patients with a rare inherited dyslipidemia. In dyslipidemia, lipid metabolism is disturbed, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Hereditary Dyslipidemias is part of the Heart and Vascular Institute (page in Dutch only).

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Familial and Hereditary Tumors

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Familial and Hereditary Tumors brings together knowledge on hereditary cancers. The center is part of the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute (Page in Dutch only). Physicians with different specialties see patients together at our outpatient clinics. They discuss their patients with each other during multidisciplinary team meetings. We also conduct various regional, national, and international research studies in the field of hereditary cancers. In this way, we would like patients and their families to benefit as much as possible from the latest scientific knowledge. Our goal is to reduce the risk of cancer for predisposed families as much as possible.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Frontotemporal Dementia

The Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Frontotemporal Dementia is a close collaboration between the Alzheimer Center and Erasmus MC’s Movement Disorders outpatient clinic. Our center focuses on diagnosis and scientific research on:

• frontotemporal dementia (FTD)
• primary progressive aphasia (PPA)
• progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP)
• corticobasal syndrome (CBS)
• related forms of dementia

Erasmus MC – Amsterdam UMC Center of Expertise for Genetic Obesity

This center of expertise is part of the ‘Centrum Gezond Gewicht’ (Healthy Weight Center), which is specialized in the care of obese children and adults.

At the Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Genetic Obesity we work together with Amsterdam UMC. A multidisciplinary team of practitioners is affiliated with our center. We are also a national referral center for the participation in clinical trials testing new medications.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for DSD

DSD stands for ‘Differences in or Disorders of Sex Development’. This is a collective term for a large group of disorders in which sexual development is abnormal. The Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for DSD offers specialized care for children, adolescents, and adults with DSD.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Growth Disorders

At this center, we give children with rare growth disorders the best possible and most comprehensive care. We also conduct scientific research to gain a better understanding of rare growth disorders and the best treatment methods. 

We contribute to creating national guidelines, setting standards of care, and continuing professional development.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Gynaecological Cancers

This center of expertise has the appropriate knowledge and expertise for fertility-sparing treatments, for cancers during pregnancy, and for complex medical treatments. A multidisciplinary team is available 24/7 for women with gynaecological cancers, which are often rare. The center has a special focus on adolescents and young adults with cancer. This center of expertise also takes the lead when it comes to cervical cancer prevention. They conduct scientific research nationally as well as internationally regarding the treatment of various rare gynaecological cancers. They collaborate closely with Delft University of Technology on innovative technological research initiatives.

The goal of our brain tumor center is to improve the quality of life and survival rates for patients with brain tumors. All our knowledge and expertise on treatment, healthcare, research, and recent developments, come together at the center. Our specialists, researchers, supervisors, and support staff work together to achieve this goal.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Pulmonary Hypertension

The Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) provides care to patients with pulmonary hypertension at an international level. This is a rare lung disorder where blood pressure rises above normal values. Patients come to the center for diagnosis, treatment, and checkups. Our multidisciplinary treatment team provides the best possible care in cases where diagnosis is difficult to establish, or when there is uncertainty about which treatment is best. By combining expertise and experience, we can provide patients with the best possible care, using the latest scientific knowledge.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Head and Neck Tumors

This center of expertise is also known as the ‘Rotterdamse Werkgroep voor Hoofd-Hals Tumoren’ (Rotterdam Working Group for Head and Neck Tumors). This working group consists of medics and paramedics involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients with a tumor in the head and neck area.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Endocrine Disorders

Various specialists work closely together at this center of expertise to provide the best possible care for patients with rare skin diseases. Our specialists treat rare skin conditions in children and adults. We endeavor to provide all of our patients with customized care.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Systemic Immune Diseases

Healthcare providers and researchers work together at this center of expertise to provide the best possible care to patients with inflammatory immunological disorders. These include autoimmune diseases and autoinflammatory diseases.

Inflammatory immunological disorders are brought about from our body’s defense system overreacting, which in turn causes inflammation. We aim to provide patients with the best possible treatment and advance understanding how these disorders develop.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Interstitial Lung Diseases

At this center of expertise, we offer the best possible care to people with interstitial lung diseases (ILD). As an accredited center of expertise for ILD, we have extensive knowledge and experience in the field of these rare lung diseases. Collaborations with other centers of expertise as well as scientific research help us to share and advance this knowledge and experience.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Hematologic Malignancies

We treat adult patients with acute leukemia, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma at this center of expertise. In addition, we also conduct scientific research and provide teaching and training related to these conditions.

The Center of Expertise for NeuroEndocrine Tumors (NET) is part of the accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Endocrine Disorders.

Our multidisciplinary team at the accredited Center of Expertise for NeuroEndocrine Tumors strives to provide customized treatment to all patients with a neuroendocrine tumor.

Erasmus MC – LUMC Center of Expertise for Leprosy

We bring specialized knowledge and experience together at the Center of Expertise for Leprosy. We do this in collaboration with Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). This has created a powerful partnership.

Leprosy is a rare and contagious disease. This infectious disease is practically non-existent in Europe. It is also sometimes referred to as Hansen’s disease. Leprosy is not very common in the Netherlands, which makes it difficult to recognize the symptoms early. We provide the best possible care for the diagnosis and treatment of leprosy.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Liver Diseases

The accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Liver Diseases is part of the Erasmus MC Liver Center. At the Liver Center, we provide care to patients with a chronic or acute liver disease. The Erasmus MC Liver Center is one of the largest liver centers in Europe.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Thoracic Oncology

Our pulmonologists at the Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Thoracic Oncology devote themselves to diagnosing and treating malignant conditions that occur in the chest.

These include tumors originating in:

• the lungs (small cell lung cancer)
• the airways
• the lung membranes (asbestos cancer or mesothelioma)
• the thymus (thymoma, thymic carcinoma).

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Laryngotracheal Stenosis

The Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Laryngotracheal Stenosis specializes in treating children with complex airway disorders. Our center is also known as the ‘Kinderluchtwegteam’. We collaborate with multiple specialties that are involved in the care provided. In addition, we also conduct ongoing scientific research to improve the care that we provide to our patients. All patients in the Netherlands who have complex airway abnormalities can contact us for evaluation and treatment, as well as if they have any questions.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Mast Cell Related Diseases

Mastocytosis is a rare disease that can manifest itself in many ways in both children and adults. A special mastocytosis outpatient clinic for children has been established at Sophia Children’s Hospital as part of Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Mast Cell Related Diseases. Erasmus MC has a mastocytosis outpatient clinic for adults. We conduct research on mastocytosis and, more broadly, on mast cell biology.

The Multiple Sclerosis Center ErasMS is part of the accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Inflammatory Disorders of the Central Nervous System

ErasMS is a multidisciplinary care and research center for children and adults with multiple sclerosis (MS). In addition to MS and neuromyelitis optica, we also focus specifically on other inflammatory diseases of the brain and spinal cord.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Kidney and Urinary Tract Diseases

Our Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Kidney and Urinary Tract Diseases specializes in disorders of:

• kidney tubules
• hereditary cystic kidneys
• kidney transplantation in children
• nephrotic syndrome
• congenital kidney and urinary tract defects
• Hinman syndrome

We provide the best care for patients with rare and inherited kidney diseases.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Endocarditis

The Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Endocarditis provides the best possible care to patients, has education and training programs, and conducts research in the field of endocarditis. Endocarditis is inflammation of the inside lining of the heart and/or heart valves. Endo means in, card means heart, and itis stands for inflammation. Endocarditis is a rare infectious disease.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare IBD and Congenital Diarrheal Disorders

We treat young children with inflammatory bowel diseases at our center of expertise. These include chronic inflammatory bowel diseases similar to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and congenital diarrhea. We provide specialist care to children with these conditions.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Inflammatory Myopathies

We see patients with inflammatory myopathies at this center of expertise. This is a condition resulting in muscle inflammation due to the immune system attacking the muscles. This results in muscle weakness and damage. Various specialties work together at our center to provide all patients with the best possible treatment.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Inflammatory Disorders of the Central Nervous System

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Eye Tumors

The Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Eye Tumors collaborates with Rotterdam Eye Hospital’s Center for Rare Eye Cancer.

These centers of expertise are leading in the treatment of eye melanomas in the Netherlands, Europe and worldwide. An eye melanoma is a rare type of cancer that develops in the pigment-producing cells in the eye. It can affect various parts of the eye, including the conjunctiva, uvea, iris, and ciliary body.

Our team of specialists is dedicated to early detecting, diagnosing and effectively treating eye melanomas. We also conduct research to better understand these melanomas and to develop new treatment options.

Our center is also known as the 'Rotterdam Oogmelanoom Centrum'.

The Center of Expertise for Uveitis is part of the broader Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Eye Diseases

At the Center of Expertise for Uveitis, we treat patients with all types of inflammation inside the eye (uveitis), both in children and in adults. We try to prevent unnecessary visual impairment by providing the best possible treatment. We conduct scientific research on uveitis, based on questions from clinical practice.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Osteochondritis Dissecans and Early Arthritis of the Elbow

This center of expertise has extensive experience in the treatment of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) in all joints. The center possesses unique knowledge and expertise in the field of OCD of the elbow. The team treats the largest number of patients with OCD of the elbow and elbow arthritis in the Netherlands. Referrals come from orthopedic surgeons and sports physicians from all over the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe. Multidisciplinary teams use innovative imaging techniques for the early diagnosis of OCD and early arthritis. They are experienced in all types of surgical and non-surgical treatment.

Orthopedic surgeon, Anna van der Windt, remarks “This accreditation (given by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport) will enable us to further improve the quality of our patient care. At the moment there is still a considerable delay in diagnosing young people with OCD of the elbow. This needs to be improved. A timely diagnosis and treatment will help us in the prevention of early arthritis in young people. That is our goal.”

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Prader-Willi Syndrome

We provide the best care at our center of expertise for children, adolescents, and adults suffering from Prader-Willi Syndrome or a Prader-Willi-like syndrome. To achieve this, we work together with various specialists at and outside the Erasmus MC. In addition, we conduct scientific research. This provides us with a better understanding of the syndrome and the treatment options. We also are involved in developing national guidelines and care standards and continually seek to increase our expertise on this syndrome.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Sarcoidosis

The accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Sarcoidosis provides care on an international level to patients with a rare inflammatory disease called sarcoidosis. We are specialized in recognizing and treating different types of sarcoidosis. Our medical treatment team can provide optimal care for those cases where:

• it is difficult to establish a diagnosis
• there is uncertainty concerning which treatment would be best, or
• the sarcoidosis has affected a vital internal organ.

We combine the knowledge and experience from different specialties.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Craniofacial Anomalies

This center of expertise provides care to those patients with cranial and facial disorders. We call these craniofacial anomalies. We are the largest craniofacial center in the Netherlands and one of the leading centers in Europe. At our center, the best possible care is available at all of our facilities and our specialists are experts in the field. Our goal is to achieve the best possible quality of life for our patients.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Cleft Palate

Our center of expertise has been providing specialized schisis care for more than half a century. It is one of the largest centers in the Netherlands. We offer children with a lip, jaw, and/or palate cleft and their parents the following support: prenatal counseling, diagnostics, and treatment.

We are also known as the ‘Schisiscentrum'.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Sickle Cell and Thalassemia

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer

The specialists at our center of expertise are fully dedicated to the treatment and support of patients with benign or malignant abnormalities of the esophagus or stomach. Gastroenterologists, surgeons, internist oncologists, radiotherapists, pathologists, nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, and clinical geneticists work together to provide the best possible diagnosis and treatment.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Neuromuscular Diseases

The specialized treatment team of the neuromuscular center has extensive experience in recognizing and treating patients with neuromuscular diseases.

Our specialists are also pioneers in researching and treating rare inflammatory disorders of the nerves in arms and legs, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, and Pompe disease.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Bleeding Disorders

The accredited hemophilia treatment center is specialized in treating and supporting children and adults with hemophilia and other rare bleeding disorders. We are there to support patients throughout their lives. We are one of the largest hemophilia treatment centers nationwide.

The Turner Syndrome Center is part of the accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for DSD (Disorders of Sex Development)

We treat and monitor girls and women with Turner Syndrome at the Turner Syndrome Center. We are particularly focused on areas of importance for the patient. This includes the transition from pediatric care to adult care.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Cystic Fibrosis (CF)

We provide high-quality care to children and adults with CF at the Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a serious, inherited disease that affects various organs in the body through an abnormal buildup of mucus. Our multidisciplinary team tries to help these patients live as normal a life as possible. A smooth transition from pediatric to adult care is carefully coordinated.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Oligodontia

Specialists at the Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Oligodontia collaborate closely to provide the best possible care to children and adults who are missing teeth and/or molars because of a developmental disorder. This is often associated with disturbances in dental and jaw development. We treat these patients from an early age and usually over a long period of time. The ultimate goal is to improve mastication (chewing of food) and appearance.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Tropical Diseases

Different departments and organizations work together at the Institute of Tropical Diseases to detect, treat, and prevent tropical infections. Tropical infections are rare in the Netherlands, but can be transmitted while traveling abroad. Transmission can take place for instance through mosquitoes, ticks, or as a result of poor hygiene. The infections can potentially be life-threatening and resistant to existing antibiotics. It can sometimes be difficult to properly recognize the infections. It is therefore important to respond to them quickly and appropriately.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Urinary Tract Tumors and Testicular Tumors

We address the treatment of testicular cancer, advanced kidney cancer, and ureteral cancer at the center. Surgery in the area at the back of the abdomen (the retroperitoneum) can be complex.

The center of expertise is also known as the 'Centrum voor Complexe Retroperitoneale Chirurgie’.

Erasmus MC– Franciscus Gasthuis & Vlietland Center of Expertise for Mesenteric Ischemia

The Rotterdam Intestinal Ischemia Center is one of two centers of expertise in the Netherlands for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic conditions caused by a reduced blood flow to the intestines. Erasmus MC collaborates with Franciscus Gasthuis & Vlietland in this field.

The center for early menopause is part of the accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for DSD (Disorders of Sex Development)

We focus on the diagnosis, treatment, and scientific research on premature menopause at this center. This rare condition is also called Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI). POI can have a great impact on a patient’s daily life, which is why high-quality and comprehensive care is important.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Soft Tissue Sarcoma

This center of expertise is specialized in treating soft tissue sarcomas. These are malignant tumors that develop in the body’s supporting tissues, such as bones or muscles. We have extensive experience with this rare condition and can provide the best possible treatment.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Urinary Tract Tumors and Testicular Tumors

At our center, we treat women with internal diseases who have a pregnancy wish, and also pregnant women who have internal diseases. This can range from common diseases such as diabetes and preeclampsia to rare conditions such as acute fatty liver during pregnancy and HELLP syndrome.
