At this center of expertise, we provide care for children and adults with congenital abnormalities of the spine and spinal cord (spinal dysraphisms). We treat both open and closed congenital defects.
- Spina bifida is an open congenital defect. Another name for spina bifida is ‘myelomeningocele’, or MMC. Erasmus MC is the only hospital in the Netherlands that can treat spina bifida before birth.
- Closed congenital abnormalities include spinal lipomas.

Inherited cognitive developmental disorders
Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Neurodevelopmental Disorders
This center of expertise collates information in the field of rare congenital disorders involving cognitive developmental impairment. We offer our patients highly-specialized care and diagnostics. We also conduct research to gain a better understanding of these disorders. We want to further improve our treatments with the outcomes of our research so that we can improve the quality of life for our patients. Several specifically recognized disorders, such as Neurofibromatosis type 1, Angelman Syndrome, and Sturge-Weber Syndrome, are covered by this center of expertise.

We treat patients with Pompe disease at the Pompe Center. Our main goal is to cure these patients and give them a better future. The Center for Porphyria is part of the accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Lysosomal and Metabolic Diseases
The Center for Porphyria is the point of contact for all porphyria patients in the Netherlands. We strive to provide patients with the best possible care. We also involve regional treatment centers in our knowledge center. In this way, we can increase expertise in the field of porphyria across the Netherlands. In addition, we conduct research at our center: our own research as well as research in collaboration with others. This center of expertise is for patients with a rare inherited dyslipidemia. In dyslipidemia, lipid metabolism is disturbed, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Familial and Hereditary Tumors
Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Familial and Hereditary Tumors brings together knowledge on hereditary cancers. The center is part of the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute (Page in Dutch only). Physicians with different specialties see patients together at our outpatient clinics. They discuss their patients with each other during multidisciplinary team meetings. We also conduct various regional, national, and international research studies in the field of hereditary cancers. In this way, we would like patients and their families to benefit as much as possible from the latest scientific knowledge. Gynaecological cancers
Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Gynaecological Cancers
This center of expertise has the appropriate knowledge and expertise for fertility-sparing treatments, for cancers during pregnancy, and for complex medical treatments. A multidisciplinary team is available 24/7 for women with gynaecological cancers, which are often rare. The center has a special focus on adolescents and young adults with cancer. This center of expertise also takes the lead when it comes to cervical cancer prevention. They conduct scientific research nationally as well as internationally regarding the treatment of various rare gynaecological cancers. They collaborate closely with Delft University of Technology on innovative technological research initiatives.

The Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) provides care to patients with pulmonary hypertension at an international level. This is a rare lung disorder where blood pressure rises above normal values. Patients come to the center for diagnosis, treatment, and checkups. Our multidisciplinary treatment team provides the best possible care in cases where diagnosis is difficult to establish, or when there is uncertainty about which treatment is best. Leprosy

We bring specialized knowledge and experience together at the Center of Expertise for Leprosy. We do this in collaboration with Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). This has created a powerful partnership.
Leprosy is a rare and contagious disease. This infectious disease is practically non-existent in Europe. It is also sometimes referred to as Hansen’s disease. Leprosy is not very common in the Netherlands, which makes it difficult to recognize the symptoms early. We provide the best possible care for the diagnosis and treatment of leprosy.

Mastocytosis

Mastocytosis is a rare disease that can manifest itself in many ways in both children and adults. A special mastocytosis outpatient clinic for children has been established at Sophia Children’s Hospital as part of Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Mast Cell Related Diseases. Erasmus MC has a mastocytosis outpatient clinic for adults. We conduct research on mastocytosis and, more broadly, on mast cell biology.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
The Multiple Sclerosis Center ErasMS is part of the accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Inflammatory Disorders of the Central Nervous System
ErasMS is a multidisciplinary care and research center for children and adults with multiple sclerosis (MS). In addition to MS and neuromyelitis optica, we also focus specifically on other inflammatory diseases of the brain and spinal cord.

Eye cancer (eye melanoma)
Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Eye Tumors
The Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Eye Tumors collaborates with Rotterdam Eye Hospital’s Center for Rare Eye Cancer.
These centers of expertise are leading in the treatment of eye melanomas in the Netherlands, Europe and worldwide. An eye melanoma is a rare type of cancer that develops in the pigment-producing cells in the eye. It can affect various parts of the eye, including the conjunctiva, uvea, iris, and ciliary body.
Our team of specialists is dedicated to early detecting, diagnosing and effectively treating eye melanomas. We also conduct research to better understand these melanomas and to develop new treatment options.
Our center is also known as the 'Rotterdam Oogmelanoom Centrum'.
Inflammations of the eye (uveitis)
The Center of Expertise for Uveitis is part of the broader Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Eye Diseases
At the Center of Expertise for Uveitis, we treat patients with all types of inflammation inside the eye (uveitis), both in children and in adults. We try to prevent unnecessary visual impairment by providing the best possible treatment. We conduct scientific research on uveitis, based on questions from clinical practice.
Orthopedic condition (OCD and arthritis of the elbow)
Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Osteochondritis Dissecans and Early Arthritis of the Elbow
This center of expertise has extensive experience in the treatment of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) in all joints. The center possesses unique knowledge and expertise in the field of OCD of the elbow. The team treats the largest number of patients with OCD of the elbow and elbow arthritis in the Netherlands. Referrals come from orthopedic surgeons and sports physicians from all over the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe. Multidisciplinary teams use innovative imaging techniques for the early diagnosis of OCD and early arthritis. They are experienced in all types of surgical and non-surgical treatment.
Orthopedic surgeon, Anna van der Windt, remarks “This accreditation (given by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport) will enable us to further improve the quality of our patient care. At the moment there is still a considerable delay in diagnosing young people with OCD of the elbow. This needs to be improved. A timely diagnosis and treatment will help us in the prevention of early arthritis in young people. That is our goal.”

We provide the best care at our center of expertise for children, adolescents, and adults suffering from Prader-Willi Syndrome or a Prader-Willi-like syndrome. To achieve this, we work together with various specialists at and outside the Erasmus MC. In addition, we conduct scientific research. This provides us with a better understanding of the syndrome and the treatment options. We also are involved in developing national guidelines and care standards and continually seek to increase our expertise on this syndrome.
Sarcoidosis

The accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Sarcoidosis provides care on an international level to patients with a rare inflammatory disease called sarcoidosis. We are specialized in recognizing and treating different types of sarcoidosis. Our medical treatment team can provide optimal care for those cases where:
- it is difficult to establish a diagnosis
- there is uncertainty concerning which treatment would be best, or
- the sarcoidosis has affected a vital internal organ.

This center of expertise provides care to those patients with cranial and facial disorders. We call these craniofacial anomalies. We are the largest craniofacial center in the Netherlands and one of the leading centers in Europe. We provide high-quality care to children and adults with CF at the Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a serious, inherited disease that affects various organs in the body through an abnormal buildup of mucus. Our multidisciplinary team tries to help these patients live as normal a life as possible. A smooth transition from pediatric to adult care is carefully coordinated.
Teeth and molars missing due to developmental disorder (oligodontia)
Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Oligodontia
Specialists at the Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Oligodontia collaborate closely to provide the best possible care to children and adults who are missing teeth and/or molars because of a developmental disorder. This is often associated with disturbances in dental and jaw development. We treat these patients from an early age and usually over a long period of time. The ultimate goal is to improve mastication (chewing of food) and appearance.
Tropical diseases
Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Tropical Diseases
Different departments and organizations work together at the Institute of Tropical Diseases to detect, treat, and prevent tropical infections. Tropical infections are rare in the Netherlands, but can be transmitted while traveling abroad. Transmission can take place for instance through mosquitoes, ticks, or as a result of poor hygiene. The infections can potentially be life-threatening and resistant to existing antibiotics. It can sometimes be difficult to properly recognize the infections. It is therefore important to respond to them quickly and appropriately.
Urinary tract cancer
Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Rare Urinary Tract Tumors and Testicular Tumors
We address the treatment of testicular cancer, advanced kidney cancer, and ureteral cancer at the center. Surgery in the area at the back of the abdomen (the retroperitoneum) can be complex.
The center of expertise is also known as the 'Centrum voor Complexe Retroperitoneale Chirurgie’.
Reduced blood flow to intestine (intestinal ischemia)

The Rotterdam Intestinal Ischemia Center is one of two centers of expertise in the Netherlands for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic conditions caused by a reduced blood flow to the intestines. Erasmus MC collaborates with Franciscus Gasthuis & Vlietland in this field.
Early menopause (POI)
The center for early menopause is part of the accredited Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for DSD (Disorders of Sex Development)
We focus on the diagnosis, treatment, and scientific research on premature menopause at this center. This rare condition is also called Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI). POI can have a great impact on a patient’s daily life, which is why high-quality and comprehensive care is important.

Erasmus MC Center of Expertise for Pregnancy-related Disorders
At our center, we treat women with internal diseases who have a pregnancy wish, and also pregnant women who have internal diseases. This can range from common diseases such as diabetes and preeclampsia to rare conditions such as acute fatty liver during pregnancy and HELLP syndrome.
