About Prof. dr. J. (Jolanda) Kluin MD PhD

Introduction

Professor Jolanda Kluin studied medicine in Rotterdam where she also did her PhD and training in cardiothoracic surgery. After that, she worked as a consultant in Utrecht and Amsterdam. She served as the chair of the European Association EACTS Women in Cardiothoracic Surgery Committee and is associate editor of the European heart Journal.

Her clinical work and surgical focus is mainly on valve reconstruction, endocarditis and the complex type of (redo) operations. Her research in translational cardiothoracic surgery includes, amongst others, development of new (e.g., tissue engineered) heart valves and the development of a hybrid, soft robotic artificial heart, virtual reality and other modern imaging tools, always with a view to this work ending up in helping the patient. She was principal investigator of the FET-Open Hybrid Heart project and is principal investigator of the NWA-ORC Holland Hybrid Heart project. She is visiting professor of Brigham and Women’s Hospital Boston and fellow of the European Society of Cardiology. She advises the Dutch government as member of the Advisory Council for Science, Technology and Innovation.

Field(s) of expertise

Research lines include:

  • Translational research on the development of new heart valve prostheses (both tissue engineered as synthetic) and the development of a soft robotic total artificial heart from bench to bed.
  • Modern imaging to improve outcomes in cardiothoracic surgery. This includes the use of VR and AR in preoperative planning, postoperative anxiety and pain reduction, and education.
  • The use of big data from large databases to improve decision making in cardiothoracic surgery with the focus on heart valve disease.

Education and career

Professor Kluin studied medicine at Erasmus University Rotterdam (Medical doctor degree cum laude), In 1999 she graduated cum laude as PhD in general surgery. She was trained as cardiothoracic surgeon at Erasmus MC Rotterdam and was a staff surgeon for 7 years at UMC Utrecht and Amsterdam UMC. Since 2023 she is head of the department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Erasmus Medical Centre Rotterdam.
